WikiLeaks アサンジが支那人だという与太話というか都市伝説がある（About an Idle Gossip or an Urban Legend: Mr. Assange, WikiLeaks, Is a Chinese Man）

いやはや、ジュリアン・アサンジが支那人なら今頃殺されているかノーベル平和賞をもらってるんでないの、という話ではない。いずれにしても単なる与太話だが。
Well, this is not the story that, if Julian were a Chinese, the Chinese government would kill him, or he’d receive the Nobel Peace Prize. But anyway this is only an idle gossip.

まず、どこからそんな話が始まったかというと、彼の妙な苗字（姓）から出た話だ。もちろん、彼の独特な奇妙な顔立ちにもよる。確かに、彼の先祖の一人がオーストラリアの木曜島に渡った「アン・サン（An Sang）」という支那人で、帰化するのに当たってアサンジ（Assange）としたというまことしやかな説があるが、たぶん間違いだ。An は「安」として、Sang を例えば「桑」とすれば、苗字は An だけだから、支那名とするのは難しい。
They began to talk like that; first, the most problematic topic is where his unusual last name (surname) came from. Of course, it also derives from his unique and strange face. True, there is a theory that is plausible. They say, “A Chinese man, one of his ancestors, named An Sang who went to Thursday Island, Australia, and changed his name to Assange as his naturalization name.” However, it’s probably a mistake. The name An Sang is divided into two: family name=“An” + given name “Sang.” There is (maybe) no such family name as “An Sang” among the Chinese. The family name is just “An” (“Sang” is not included).If so, it is difficult to call “Assange” a Chinese name.

なるほど、Assange という名前をアメリカ移民の中から探すと出てこない。アメリカ移民にはさまざまな苗字があるので、たいてい簡単にヒットする。しかしAssange はだめだ。Assange の “ge” を本人もメディアもフランス語風のジまたはジュと発音してゲとは発音していない。それならフランス系かと思って検索すると、なんとフランス人にもいないのだ。アサンジ以外にヒットするのは、たぶんアサンジの縁者であるオーストラリア人だけだ。
Indeed, Assange won’t come out, when we search it in the name list of American Immigration, where most family names are easily found. But Assange is not. Mr. Assange himself as well as the media pronounces the letters "ge" in his name as if it were a French name, i.e., “ju.” Then, reasonably, we search for it in French names but, again, “Assange” will not appear. If you can find one, s/he’s just an Australian relative of Mr. Assange, maybe.

極めて珍しい苗字であることだけは確かだ。因みに米国議会図書館で “Assange” という著者名で検索すると１件だけハッキング関係の本がヒットする。まさに、その本の共著者としてのジュリアン・アサンジである。他にはいないのだ。たったの一人も。で、確かに、顔はどうなのか。どこからどこまでもコーケイジアン（白人）とは言い切れないかもしれない。八分の一、あるいは四分の一、アジア人と言われたら、そうかもしれないし、そうでないかもしれない。

Only one thing is certain, that is, it’s a very unusual surname. Incidentally, if you search for books by the author name “Assange” in the Library of Congress, you’ll find a book on hacking. Indeed, it’s Julian Assange as co-author of the book. No other authors. Not a one. Well, then, how about his face? Some people doubt that he is thoroughly Caucasian (white). One-eighth, or quarter Asian? Maybe, maybe not, . . . if you ask me.
